02.10.07 Not Remotely Aloof - The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Sunday's Sydney Architecture Festival was an attempt to recast architects in the eyes of the public... "Behind the festival lies the admission that architects need to improve their image. Often seen as remote and aloof, their ideas and designs shape our urban landscape." The article then goes on to discuss the history of Martin Place. 02.10.07 Significant vacancy - Apparently Crown is wanting to quietly sneak up another 27 level hotel next to the casino, and is bypassing the normal procedures (ie planning) in its eagerness. Only projects of state significance are meant to zigzag around planning, but luckily this IS significant. "Crown chief executive David Courtney says the project is significant to the state because Melbourne already hosts world-class international conventions and more hotel rooms are needed." 19.09.07 Us vs. Them - Norman Lebrecht, writing for Bloomberg.com, recently described the "art wars" between Sydney and Melbourne. According to Lebrecht, most of Melbourne's arts precinct was built as a response to Sydney's new Opera House, but was less of a success. "Melbourne, in the year of the opera's opening, established a riverside arts center with a 120-meter-high spire and, a decade later, a neighboring concert hall, which looks from the outside like a multistory[sic] parking lot and from the inside like a concrete barn." The Arts Centre's own history (here as a PDF ) states that Roy Grounds masterplanning was approved 1960, the National Gallery of Victoria opened in 1968, and that the theatres were delayed a few years because of problems with the mud (the Arts Centre unfortunately desrcibes these as "geographic difficulties"). BLOOMBERG 17.09.07 HAMER HALL In other news recently to hand... the Victorian State government is to spend $5M investigating ways to fix the tangle of arterial roads, buildings and levels that characterises the centre of the arts precincy. THE AGE 09.08.07 Reacquaint yourself with his work at PICTURE AUSTRALIA (just pop "Sievers" into the search box). 19.05.07 Marc Newson in 1st class - Once a Sydney surfie, now a European style-mongerer, Marc Newson is apparently the designer to turn Qantas from dowdy to dandy.
