PUBLIC LECTURE
<span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 128);"> Cassio Taniguchi</span>
Secretary for the Department of Urban and Environmental Development, Brasilia and former Mayor of Curitiba, Brazil
Focusing on the urban planning of Curitiba, Cassio Taniguchi will discuss the improvements which were implemented over 30 years, and describe how it grew to become a model for many cities in Brazil and abroad. The lecture will also cover the problems of dealing with substantial political change over this period and how as Mayor, he managed these challenges.
Cassio Taniguchi graduated from Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronautica (ITA), in São José dos Campos, as electronic engineer. Taniguchi came to Paraná in 1965 and began his professional career at Companhia de Desenvolvimento Econômico do Paraná - Codepar. He was the Chairman of URBS - Companhia de Urbanização de Curitiba from 1972 to 1975, where coordinated the implementation of industrial city of Curitiba, currently responsible for the creation of more than 250 thousands jobs. He worked in urbanization projects from 1975 to 1980 in São Paulo, Guarujá, Niterói and Dourados. He also developed transportation projects in Aracaju, Recife, Goiânia, Campo Grande, João Pessoa and Salvador.
Taniguchi was the Chairman of Instituto de Pesquisa e Planejamento de Curitiba - IPPUC from 1980 to 1983 and from 1989 to 1994, and was the State Secretary of Planning and Coordination, jointly with Industry and Commerce from 1995 to 1996.
He was elected Curitiba Mayor in 1996 and reelected in 2000. At the end of his term in 2004, he began lecturing worldwide and was a member of UNITAR, an ONU arm to support special programs of orientation for public administration staff. In 2005 he was named president of Instituto Tancredo Neves do Paraná, a center for political, social and economical research, linked to PFL - Partido da Frente Liberal.
