Denton Corker Marshalls latest commission in China
Denton Corker Marshall has again shown it is one of the leading international architectural practices working in China, by winning a new commission to design a landmark development in the city of Ningbo.
Positioned on an island precinct of Ningbo, a city near Shanghai, the Dongqianhu International Educational Forum Complex is a large-scale multi-functional development comprising convention centre, exhibition hall, hotel, market and tourist facilities.
Denton Corker Marshalls striking design, influenced by Chinas rich culture and heritage, will provide an international waterside icon for the city. Reminiscent of the nine dancing dragons or the calligraphers brush stroke, the complexs two arms are composed of floating ribbon forms, twisting and turning along the lake setting. The exhibition hall for culture, art and education forms a tail and body to the dragons, while the convention centre rises up to form the head of the complex.
Speaking about the commission, Denton Corker Marshall Director Adrian FitzGerald commented, As part of Chinas expanding engagement with the world community, our client wanted to build a forum complex to attract international educationalists and world leaders to China. They specifically asked for an architecture of and about Chinese culture on the one hand, and on the other, an architecture that would put Ningbo on the international map. We hope that the forum buildings, with their cultural references and unique form, will not only be a landmark for architecture, but also an appropriate catalyst for furthering the discourse on educational practices in both China and the rest of the world.
This is the latest Chinese commission for the practice whose current workload comprises two major new shopping centres in Beijing, as well as residential developments in Shenyang, Tianjin, Chong Qing, Changsha and Chengdu.
