Docklands dilemmas
The Age newspaper is attempting to bring some culture to the docklands. All initiatives for non-commercial space have fallen by the way over the years as many locals have glumly come to accept that their new suburb will be nothing more than a bland combination of footy, cafes and 'lifestyle' apartments. Local restauranteurs wonder why no one goes to visit - maybe it's because there is nothing to visit there. An attempt like this by The Age could be just enough to shame VicUrban into adjusting their priorities. The Age articles highlight the tension between two camps - one believing that this new building should be an icon, a Guggenheim at the end of the pier, and the other camp see the site as more of an opportunity to provide some kind of cultural crux to the Docklands - substance over form. Interestingly, this first article was the most popular for the day at the online Age.
