    Yes, I noticed this.

Not quite sure what to make of that building. Not sure I'd miss it if it was gone.

In some respects it is innovative and quirky with its 70s retro theme. I can see its value from an …
  • thanks peter,

this is a real shame. Moscow intrigues me, although I have never been there. heritage buildings of this scale (although possibly not iconic) would still seem to be a real loss in any other city.
  • this is a horrible retro design with little to no redeeming value.
I much preferred what was already there, at least it didn't stick out like a sore thumb from the main road and ruin what is a great urban streetscape.
    What is more is tha…
  • The token efforts using plastic barricades that councils are doing to keep the trees alive is not helping either. Someone needs to explain to them that the "drip line" is not right at the base of the trunk ....

    These trees are important…
  • was there any consultation for this ?

It seems a structure more inkeeping with the gardens and is an interesting modern design. The ventilation of it is quite unique.

I'd hate to see it replaced with a cheap arse Exeloo, tho…
  • I don't think anyone really needs proof like this.

I am just ashamed to be called Australian when our government refuses to honour Kyoto protocols.
  • yes, it is a real shame about Nauru house and also the island nation of Nauru as well.

What a fall from grace. :(

  • Yes, and now I learn that another institution the classic art-deco Astor theatre http://www.astor-theatre.com/ on the famous Chapel Street will most likely close it's doors ...

  • I'm still afraid to go down there, as it almost brings a tear to my eye.

I'll be happy to return once the work is all finished.
  • Yes, for all of those reasons.

    1) the cure breaks the city grid
    2) the granite/concrete faceted finish is terribly 80s and tacky.
    3) the great big blank wall at the back of the building when viewed from most angles
    4) t…
  • sad.

A trip to Gaslight, along with "Fast Eddies" on Bourke Street was once a highlight of visiting Melbourne for me.

It is good to see the city experiencing a revival of sorts though. A lot of this is due to a revitalised S…
  • yep, I was suprised to find Walking Melbourne forum quoted in it also ...

Seems to be a common thing to do these days in government reports as a means of gauging the vox populi
  • I must say that it is not one of my favourites.

It has a little bit of art-deco detail, but it mostly an uninteresting early modern building.

I think it was re-done as apartments at about the same time as the Customs building…
  • Was great to see Geoff Fitzpatrick inducted into the Design Institute of Australia Hall of Fame recently.

Good to see talented Victorians acknowledged nationally, there are so many of them.
  • Hi everyone,

Thanks for all of your support guys!

As Peter said, the site is now back up online, including the forum.

It is a lot of work Tom, but like you I do have a passion for it.
    Sites like yours and Pe…
  • Peter, I think it was more a problem with the version 10-11 patch rather than version 11 itself. It seems that although the patch updated the version number, it didn't actually fix the vulnerable piece of code. Rather than search it out myself, I …
  • Hi Peter,

Walking Melbourne is no longer as a result of a malicious Sanity Worm hack to our PHPBB discussion forum, despite being the latest version 2.0.11 (as recommended by PHPBB) and having all patches up to date.
    As a result …
  • On a recent visit to Brisbane, I was quite suprised by the CityCat ferry terminals, like Bulimba and Hawthorne. It seems that each of these terminals, built as late as a few years ago, is designed in an mock Edwardian almost like little replicas of…
  • I wonder what sort of person would participate in a Paruresis survey ...
  • This is terrible news.

I would much prefer to see them build a faithful replica of Kirbys Kiosk.
  • this is a great idea!

I wonder who is in it and what sort of consultancy that they charge.
  • What is worse is that Australia is considering doing a deal with the US to become a nuclear power .... using the Sydney research centre as a development centre and taking on board some unused but strategic missiles from the US.

  • can I choose more than one ?

Great absorbing site, keep up the good work.
Architect interviews would be a great idea .... don't know how possible that is though.

  • Interesting ....
I heard that the City of Yarra the first Greens government in Australia. Is this true ?
I also read that their budgetary and planning record has not been good. The cheesegrater project I think is the main offender.
  • Well done !
Hopefully the Butterpaper forum will be a refreshing change to some of the other forums out there.
I look forward to seeing some posts about architecture from around the world.
