Christmas Island detention centre
Pamela Curr recently toured the new, expensively empty Christmas Island detention centre and passed her impressions and pics along to Crikey. This is where Australia will put many a future unstamped arrivals. It is very much a gaol, as anyone who saw the plans could tell (I seem to have lost them..). The design seemed to concentrate more on clear CCTV viewing paths than anything else. I had better dig them up. Curr noted that just about everything in the place was caged, including the lights. “The leitmotif is cage – all sixes and shapes. Everything is caged lights, gym, cameras everything.” More at Crikey.
