Write on Design

Do you live and breathe design? Are you a budding wordsmith, keen to critically engage with the ideas, events and creative thinking behind this year’s State of Design Festival?

The Write On Design program seeks expressions of interest from emerging design writers to act as on-the-ground correspondents during the festival for Artichoke magazine and the State of Design website. The program will encourage selected correspondents to consider alternative forms of reporting including video logs, blogging and radio broadcast alongside the more traditional format of written article submission.

A total of 8 emerging writers will be chosen to deliver two pieces each over the course of the festival. Running from the 20 – 31 of July 2011 contributors will be required to submit pieces within 24 hour deadlines for upload directly to the festivals DTV (Design TV). Select pieces will also be published in Artichoke’s printed coverage of the festival.

Emerging writers will be teamed with established design writers who will act as a mentors to help shape coverage of the festival. This year’s mentors are:

  • Melanie Joosten is a freelance writer and former assistant editor of Artichoke magazine. Her first novel, Berlin Syndrome, is being published in July.
  • Marcus Baumgart is a designer writer and reluctant urbanist, who practises at Williams Boag Architects. He’s written for Artichoke since its very early issues.
  • Niki Kalms lectures in interior architecture at Monash University. She writes about design for various publications, including Houses, Landscape Architecture Australia and Artichoke.
  • Toby Horrocks is an architect and freelance writer. He also does clever things with cardboard for his company Freefold Furniture.
