PARK(ing) Day started in 2005 as a temporary art project to raise awareness about the lack of green spaces in San Francisco’s downtown. It was transformed an on-street car park into a park (simply with turf, a tree and a seat). Since then it has sparked imaginations around the world and now every September, people are now transforming ‘car parks’ to inspiring fun and creative ‘people parks’. In 2007, 180 PARKs were created in 47 major cities.

This year it is happening in Brisbane on 19th September 2008 and we are inviting students, planners, urban designers, architects, outdoor furniture designer, community farms, tranport advocates, public artists, and ANYONE who care about the design of our urban places!!

The PARKs will be surprising additions to the everyday street environments in Brisbane’s urban centres, and will be powerful symbols of place-making and communities wanting to improve urban quality. PARK(ing) Day is all about –
1. Rethinking the way we use our streets
2. Calling attention to the need for urban public spaces
3. Creating conversations about how we design our cities
