Riken Yamamoto (b. 1945) is one of the most prominent members of the generation of architects that includes Tadao Ando, Toyo Ito and Itsuko Hasegawa, who grew up in post-war Japan. Based in Yokohama, Yamamoto re-conceives architecture to respond to changes taking place in contemporary society. His work includes award-winning houses that respond to the changing role of the individual in society and the changing nature of the family unit, and ground-breaking educational projects designed to make possible new curricula and to introduce fresh approaches to teaching into Japan’s moribund education system.

Yamamoto has been the subject of several monographs and exhibitions, has received numerous awards and has been published around the world. Currently he has projects in the Netherlands, China, Korea and throughout Japan.
