Making a difference

<p>Gill Hicks was once the publisher of Blueprint Magazine. Tragedy struck on her way to work in 2005 when she found herself on the wrong train at the wrong time - she was permanently disabled in the London bombings. Last month she <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/5214869/Gill-Hicks-Its-time-to-draw-a-line-under-conflict.html">told the Telegraph</a>, <i><span style="color: rgb(51, 153, 102);"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: separate; font-family: arial; font-size: 13px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: 17px; orphans: 2; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">“I have learnt how precious life is. It takes great inner strength and courage to be the person who says, ‘Enough, let’s stop’ or ‘Let’s find a way other than violence’. I’m not Mother Teresa. I’m not an activist. I have no experience of peace-building. But I am not alive without conditions: I have to try to make a difference.”</span></span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: separate; color: rgb(64, 64, 64); font-family: arial; font-size: 13px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: 17px; orphans: 2; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;"> </span>Now she heads up the newly formed <a href="http://www.madforpeace.org/">Making a Difference for Peace</a> organisation.</p>
<p>"<span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: separate; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Arial; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; orphans: 2; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">Our background is in arts, design and<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>contemporary culture – our aim is to draw<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>from these disciplines to find a new<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>language, a new way to communicate the importance of peace.</span>"</p>
<p>This has proven a busy year for the Adelaide-born Hicks. Already she has been <a href="http://www.acmagazine.co.uk/architecturefoundationboard.htm">appointed </a>to the board of the Architects Foundation in London,  <a href="http://www.advance.org/en/art/3587/">received</a> this year's "Australian Woman of the Year in the UK" award, and been awarded an MBE for services to charity. That's in addition to running a design and publishing practice, and heading curation at the Design Council.</p>

Excellent initiative, I like the notion that achieving peace requires action--not inaction...
